South Yorkshire was the destination as the cream of the global darting fraternity all descended upon Barnsley to kick the 2022 PDC pro-tour season off.

MDA fielded seven players, including debutant Nathan Rafferty and non tour card holder Stephen Burton – appearing by virtue of a strong start to his challenge tour campaign.

Day one saw Daryl Gurney burst out of the blocks and produce the kind of form which has landed him two major PDC titles.

Superchin comfortably dispatched of Florian Hempel 6-2 with an average a smidgen under 100 before defeating Corkonian, John O’Shea 6-3.

The impressive performances kept coming, none more so than a sublime display to knockout three time world champion, Michael van Gerwen in the board final.

It was yet another blistering demonstration of Gurney’s ability, clinching a fine 6-3 victory over the Dutchman and posting a 98.82 average in doing so.

Into the last 16, and Daryl overcame Lee Evans – not the comedian – with a 6-3 scoreline.

The opposition in the quarter-final didn’t get any easier. This time, the Derry man was pitted against another multi world champion in Gary Anderson. In a pulsating contest that went right to the wire, it was Gurney who pinched the deciding leg to progress.

Unfortunately that is where the Irishman’s magnificent run ended but not without another monumental battle. In an epic encounter, Luke Humphries managed to just get over the line first, claiming a 7-6 victory.
